What was your inspiration for this story?
Parts of this story were taken from an unfinished children’s book I began writing years ago. The setting, Kalaloch, Wa, is one of my favorite places on earth, and I’ve wanted to use it in a story for ages. It’s a magically beautiful area.

Who is your favorite character in your story?
Probably Liv. She’s a teen who’s been through a bit of a rough patch, but by the end of the story, you see her growth. Liv is just trying to do the best she can, like so many of us. I love that she doesn’t give up.

What is your writing process like?
I’m a plotter. I begin with a rough story idea, then I get out my plotting board. I organize my novels by scene, with an overview of what action will take place in each scene. Then, I sit down and write. I find it very difficult to write without a plan. The few times I’ve tried it, I end up floundering. I would be lost without my board.

Is fantasy the genre you usually write in?
I generally write paranormal romance, but have written a contemporary romance, and am now trying my hand at YA.

How long on average does it take you to write a story?
I primarily write novels. Crystal Tide is the first short story I’ve written in years. This story took me about two weeks to write from start to finish.

How important was research to you when writing this story?
I didn’t have to do much research for this story. I’m pretty familiar with mermaid lore, and very familiar with my setting, so I was able to go for it.

Are there any books that you are currently reading and why?
I’m currently reading Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart. It’s a gothic romance novel, written in the 50’s. I love mystery, suspense, and books that are a bit creepy.

What are you writing now or what are you planning on writing next?
I am currently writing a YA historical mystery. Next, I will finish up my paranormal romance series with the fifth and final book.

Do you have any upcoming releases?
The second book in The Immortal Kindred Series, Rebel Heart, released on February 12th. Book three, The King of Kings is scheduled for a July release.
