Today we’re talking to the author of “Mall of Magic”, Melissa Sell.
What was your inspiration for this story?
A writing prompt in the group Writing Bad. Several people commented their enjoyment of the first part and encouraged me to make it a story or a YA series.
Do you have a favorite character in your story?
Lern. He’s quirky, awkward, and overly dramatic. Some of the best people I know in real life are like that.
What is your writing process like?
Organized chaos. Sounds insane, but it works for me. Ideas pop up like heartbeats, so I keep pen and paper handy at all times. I keep separate notebooks for different stories, but I have one particular notebook just for ideas. I also keep a binder with character sheets in it for all my different characters. Even if they aren’t in a story, they are created for one, or if I ever get to play D&D again. LOL
Is fantasy the genre you usually write in?
I have more books in fantasy than any other, but my genre of choice is murder/mystery. I do find a certain satisfaction with fantasy as its limits are endless.
How long on average does it take you to write a story?
Short stories, maybe a couple of hours if I can set aside the time. Sometimes days, if I’m unable to devote time to it all at once. Novels, more of stretch there. I write an outline for the entire book, which is pretty much everything that happens. From there it’s typing and filling in all the details. The time for them really depends on how well behaved I can get my kids to be. lol
How important was research to you when writing this story?
For fantasy, such as spells, magic, and witchcraft take part in many of the stories I tell, so not much research is done. I have pretty much all of the ingredients…er, information I need on hand already. 😉
Are there any books that you are currently reading and why?
I have so many! LOL I purchase the Pixie Forest Publishing book boxes which really help for new reads from Indie authors! I just started The Culling by Tricia Wentworth. I am currently going through comments on my Sunday Share posts to find books to feature on my website along with their authors.
What are you writing now or what are you planning on writing next?
Right now I am editing some of my previously published works with beta readers. It’s a fantasy trilogy called The Chronicles of Fey. Once they are finished and re-released, I will continue working on my murder mystery and my superhero series.
Do you have any upcoming releases?
The Chronicles of Fey is set to be re-released this summer (2019) along with my original thriller novel Writers’ Edge. Also, out later this year (late Fall/Winter) is my murder/mystery Sins of Egypt and the first book in my superhero series, Intergalactic Entropies: The Civilian Chapters.
Where can we find you?
