Ice Cream Playdough

For Christmas, H received a play dough ice cream maker. He LOVES it but the normal playdough that came with it is so hard. I’ve been meaning to make him some new dough since then but haven’t.

H had surgery this morning. Tubes in his ears and adenoids removed. Supposed to do low energy play for the next few days and playdough is perfect! Once he felt up to it we whipped up a batch and split it in two. We made mint and chocolate.

I know he loves strawberry (anything) but I didn’t have any food coloring to match. I DID have cocoa powder and mint extract!

1 cup flour
2 TBS cream of tartar
1/2 cup salt
3/4 cup water (a little more for the chocolate)
2 TBS vegetable oil
*Food coloring to your liking (I used lime green gel for the mint dough)
*Mint extract to your liking. I used about 1/4- 1/2 tsp
*Cocoa powder ( I used at least 2 TBS but I didn’t measure it)

Mix your dry ingredients together in a bowl. Add in the wet and mix well. Divide into another bowl and add your “flavoring” 😉  Cook on the stove over medium high heat until it forms a dough.
Let cool until touchable then knead until smooth.

We made ice cream sundaes, cones, and cakes until he tired of it and switched to his playdough firetruck and making monsters. Both kinds smelled great and were nice and soft. 🙂 Overall a success.

Another fun recipe I found for ice cream playdough used pre-made frosting and powdered (or confectioners) sugar. It has an ice cream consistency and is edible! (Though quite sugary. Yaaaaay hyperness!)  Jump on over to SmartSchoolHouse to see the recipe and pictures!
